Welcome, Mr. Merritt

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of DePaul Catholic,

As a graduate of the Class of 1971, I know that DePaul made a huge difference in my life. I hope your memories are as happy and proud as mine are.

My appointment by Bishop Sweeney to the position of President of DePaul Catholic is a great honor for my family and me. I am thrilled, grateful, and humbled. I am prepared to give my best effort to continue the DePaul tradition of offering young women and men the finest Catholic co-educational education in North Jersey. The tradition began in 1956 on the second story of Holy Spirit School in Pompton Plains, and continues today at our campus on Alps Road. Sorry, the cow pasture is long gone!

The school today has a burgeoning student enrollment including a unique 8th Grade Prep Program. What else can you expect from DePaul? Well, we have outstanding academics, athletics, the arts, and, of course, service to the community and to God. There is always a time and a place for the kids at school to have a little fun. (But not too, too much fun!)

Popular events such as the Tricky Tray, the Sister Patricia Flarity Golf Tournament, the 9 and Dine, the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, and the Distinguished Alumni Gala will continue. Of course, we can assist you with your class reunions, too. Just contact the Advancement Office for details.

I also encourage all alumni and friends to join our growing family of donors. The lifeblood of any Catholic school is the yearly gifts from alumni and friends. Yearly gifts of $25, $50, or whatever works for you, are how we are able to hold our tuition at a level that allows us to provide an opportunity for qualified students to attend DePaul. These donations also provide for our Academy Programs; they help to provide our athletes with the best equipment and coaches; they help to continue to beautify our campus, just to name a few.

There will be new opportunities to spread the good news of DePaul. The Sentinel, our DePaul electronic newsletter, will continue to update friends and DePaul families. DePaul is now on most social media platforms and we are constantly updating and improving how we can better communicate with you.

Since opening day in 1956, DePaul has preached about the value and importance of Faith in God, Love of Family, and Friendships for Life. Simply: Faith, Family and Friends. These words are DePaul, and will always be DePaul, as long as I serve as your President.

Finally, it has never been more important for all of us to remember, and act upon, the advice of our first Director, Monsignor John P. McHugh. He, along with the Sisters of Charity of Convent Station and some great families, built DePaul. These words have always helped me: If to be right means to be different, then by all means be different.
